Celebrating National Nurses Week – May 6-12, 2022
Nurses do some of the most demanding and terrible responsibilities in the medical profession, from dealing with life-threatening ER crises to delivering newborns and caring for the elderly in their final moments. Nurses are the primary point of contact for most patients because they execute the most important healthcare activities.
National Nurses Week recognizes and thanks nurses for their accomplishments and sacrifices, as well as reminding us to thank the medical professionals who keep us well. Between May 6, National Nurses Day, and May 12, the birthdate of renowned nurse Florence Nightingale, it is commemorated.
NATIONAL NURSES WEEK HISTORY
Nurses are now recognized as highly specialized professionals with a wide range of skills, despite their past reputation as lowly doctors’ assistants. To become a nurse nowadays, you’ll need four years of school and a lot of attention and effort. This multifaceted profession with a wide range of expertise serves as a vital link between patients and doctors.
Florence Nightingale, who lay the groundwork for professional nursing during and after the Crimean War, is credited with the birth of contemporary nursing. Nightingale developed cleanliness rules and other measures at battlefield hospitals as a nurse manager on the frontlines, dramatically reducing infections and mortality.
In 1974, the International Council of Nurses designated May 12 as International Nurses Day to recognise nurses’ efforts and draw attention to their working conditions. A few years later, the celebration was expanded to a week, and National Nurses Week was formed in 1994. The American Nurses Association is sponsoring and promoting the week-long event, which highlights the vital contributions that nurses make to the community.
Nurses in the United Kingdom commemorate Florence Nightingale’s midnight visits to injured troops, which earned her the moniker “Lady with the Lamp.” A ceremonial lamp is handed through a line of nurses from Westminster Abbey’s Nurses’ Chapel to the abbey’s High Altar on May 12, signifying the passing of knowledge.
