On September 11, 2001, 19 militants connected with the Islamic activist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and passed out suicide attacks against targets in the United States of America. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City; third airplane smacked the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Usually referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in widespread death and devastation, triggering major U.S. initiatives to battle terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush. Information About 9/11 Attacks
The attackers were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and some additional Arab nations. Supposedly, they were funded by Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terrorist association. Several of them had lived in the United States for more than a year and had taken flying training at American commercial flight schools. The 18 terrorists effortlessly smuggled box-cutters and knives throughout security at three airports and boarded four flights ready for California, preferred because the planes were full with fuel for the extended transcontinental flight. Shortly after takeoff, the terrorists seized the planes and took the controls, transforming standard traveler jets into guided missiles.
In less than 15 minutes after the terrorists hit the nerve center of the U.S. armed forces, the terror in New York took a catastrophic twirl for the worse when the south tower of the World Trade Center bent into a colossal cloud of dust and smoke. At 10:30 a.m., the other Trade Center tower deformed. Close to 3,000 people died in the World Trade Center and its locality. No more than six people in the World Trade Center towers at the point of their end, survived. About 10,000 were treated for wounds, various severe.
In the meantime, a fourth California-bound plane was hijacked under 40 minutes after leaving Newark International Airport in New Jersey. Passengers knowing that the plane was not returning to an airport as the hijackers claimed, a collection of passengers and flight attendants intended an insurrection. The passengers fought the four hijackers and are assumed to have attacked the cockpit with a fire extinguisher. The plane then tossed over and sped toward the ground, crashing in a pastoral field in western Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m. All 45 people on board were killed. Its anticipated target is not known, but theories include the White House, the U.S. Capitol or the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the American-led international attempt to cast out the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and demolish Osama bin Laden’s terrorist set of connections based there began on October 7.
