Ganesh Chaturthi – My Favourite Festival
Ganesh Chaturthi is the most ‘looked-for festival’ in state of Maharashtra. It’s a significant Hindu festival, celebrated with great ecstasy and enthusiasm. Ganesh Chaturthi is noticeable as the birthday of Lord Ganesha or myth logically called – ‘Vigana Harta’ (remover of obstacles). On this day, the followers of Lord Ganesha, the child of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, propose prayers to their idol and request his blessings.
The most excellent celebrations related with Ganesha Chaturthi are generally witnessed in the state of Maharashtra where celebrations extend across ten days. The state observes celebrations on massive proportions; Ganesha pandals (stages) are shaped and ornamented superbly till the day of Ganesh Murti Visarjan (immersion of Ganesha idols in to the stream)
When is Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth (Chaturthi) day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Bhadrapad month (August-September) according to the Hindu calendar.
Celebration of Ganesh Chaturathi
Even though the Ganesha Chaturthi festival falls in the month of Bhado (August-September) but the arrangements for the merriment starts glowing in advance. Fine-looking idols of Lord Ganesha, of all sizes – small, medium and large, are prepared. The holiness and passion dominates the complete ambiance.
How to Do Ganesh Puja? Timing for Ganesh Puja
On the celebratory day these idols are positioned in the households and public mandaps. Then the ceremony of the Pranapratishhtha Pooja is performed to appeal to the divine existence of Lord Ganesha into the icon followed by the devotion with sixteen modes of presenting respect, known as Shhodashopachara. Offering of Durva (grass) blades and modaka, a delicacy made out of rice flour, jaggery, and coconut, is an essential element of the Ganesha Chaturthi puja. Ganesha is also presented crimson red flowers, and anointed with a red chandan.
For the following 10 days, the Ganesha temples, each household and big mandaps are persuaded away by the name of their most cherished God Ganesha. On 11th day, the procession ceremony of the immersion of the idol into a water body is performed to see-off the noble and praying him to take away all hardships and come yet again next year.
Story of Ganesh Chaturthi
As per the Hindu mythological scriptures Lord Ganesha was shaped by Goddess Parvati, spouse of Lord Shiva. It is supposed that one day Parvati created a sculpture from the paste that she used on her body prior to taking bath. She infused life in that shape and ordered him to safeguard the access of her bathroom. God Shiva returned and was blocked at the entry of his house by that boy. In intense fury Shiva struck off the boy’s head. This event filled Parvati in absolute pain and requested Shiva to return her son. Then Shiva fixed the head of an elephant and brought back life onto the body of that boy. Lord Shiva named this boy as “Ganpati” Gan means (hosts) & Pati means (Chief) and blessed that Ganpati would be adored before each fresh venture.

Ganesh Chaturthi holds supreme importance among the supporters of Lord Ganesha. Lots of arrangements are made to rejoice this propitious occasion: huge public processions, pooja ceremonies, communal get together, assembly of massive mandpas and extraordinary spiritual ceremonies are planned. Apart from a gigantic occasion, Ganesh Chaturthi has also turned out to be a very significant financial activity.
