Religion and Society
Big bang theory brought our universe into existence. Questions probing existence dint stop there. People went further to know beyond the unknown. They questioned on who and what is behind all that happens. Religion is a vibrant tradition. Some believe that some force is the reason for their existence. Others believe that they just exist because they exist. Religion can be defined as the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or God’s. It gives us all the ideas about the relationship between science and religion. People call it faith, belief, worship, divinity, theology and more. Other call it “Calling”. It is basically and orderly system of worshipping those that created you and the surroundings. We call to God in times of our happiness, sadness and anxiety. Society has accepted this calling as a daily behaviour. People are encouraged to turn to God for its own benefits.
India is rich in varied religions and its traditions. Many religions are practiced across the world. Each religion is accepted and followed by many people. Each religion has a set of basic rules which form the basics of that religious community.
Buddhism is a well known religion especially in the Asia Pacific region. It basically means “to awaken”. It originated 2500 years ago when Siddhartha Gotama was enlightened at the age of 35. He was later known as Buddha and had many foloowers who asked for inner peace. This religion spread across our country and the nearby places.
Hinduism is the most common religion followed in our country. It means “way of life”. It nearly has one billion followers who are mostly from Nepal, India and Indonesia. Hinduism is the third largest religion by population across the globes. The Gods and Goddesses’ listed in this wonderfully crafted religion is numerous. Each of them has a different power and represents varied pillars of the Universe. Ramayana and Mahabharata are their Classics.
Wicca is another religion known as “The Craft”. An old religion that is diverse practices “Benevolent Witch Craft” as a part of Paganism. It originated from England by Gerald Gardner in 1954. it involves ritual practice of ancient Pagan and Hermetic Motifs.
Islam is another religion practiced worldwide. Initially, the religion started off at Arabia to reveal humanity to the people by various Prophets. Prophet Mohammed was notable amongst them. Followers or Muslims believed that their existed only one God and Mohammed was their Prophet. Quran is the book they follow.
Christianity is another popular religion. They follow the rules mentioned in their book, “Bible”. It is based on the teachings of the Messenger (Son) of God, “Jesus”. It is the most followed religion across the globe. It has nearly 2.5 billion followers. Those who follow Christianity is called as a Christian.
Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest religions. It originated approximately 3500 years ago. It is a monotheistic religion found in Iran around 3500 years ago.
Religions are many. The ones mentioned above are just a few. Even in tribal areas, a new religion can be seen. This is how diverse our society can be. Amongst this we find peace. We find unity in diversity.
